TWELVE

Dripping sweat, Yorian leapt clear as the occorite brought a mine-cart shaped fist down onto the ground, cracking the stone with a blow that would have shattered his bones. In the rear, Escador ran past, slamming a fist into the metal railings serving as the occorite’s legs. Parriel was at the edge of the cavern, his own abilities completely locked away with Wexel not around.

Yorian was feeling the absence of Gurg as well, along with his other sword. Losing the other half of his blade meant he couldn’t activate the majority of its stronger enchantments, including his more offensive options. Being without the ability to cast spells wasn’t as big of an issue, and thankfully, Yorian still had his synergies. Still, this was an opponent where he could have really used a partner.

With Gurg’s help, Yorian could have easily repositioned, attacked the occorite’s flank, or even tried to pin it down. Gurg’s tentacles were stronger than people realized, and he had a good few of them.

Another swing from the occorite forced Yorian to spin away, narrowly clearing the attack range. From a distance, he could see the series of small slices he’d managed to score across the body. Minor wounds, true, but given that he was chopping into materials that had been heavily fortified by occoreal, it lined up. Had he been using a regular blade, Yorian would have snapped the weapon on the first strike.

But it wasn’t a winning tactic, that had become clear. No, his best option for hobbling the occorite was to cut at the metal railings functioning as its limbs. Even with an enchanted blade, it wouldn’t be easy. If only Parriel could cast, he’d be able to help the issue, however none of them could circumvent the limits of their bond.

Dashing in, Yorian avoided another slam and ventured close to the occorite, slashing out and hearing an ear-splitting screech as metal pulled against metal. When the pair parted, there was a visible groove cut into the railing, but it didn’t go all the way through. The occorite spun toward Yorian, who found himself slightly out of position after overcommitting his attack.

Before the occorite could pounce on the opportunity, a familiar form appeared behind it. Escador slammed his fists into the partially cut railing, finishing the job and snapping the leg cleanly off. Since the occorite was mid-spin, its suddenly unbalanced momentum sent it crashing down. Although it immediately worked to recover, Yorian was already attacking.

With stable footing and a higher position, it was much easier to launch a flurry of powerful strikes into those metal limbs. He didn’t cut with every slash, or even every three, but the young wizard was relentless as he fought, never slowing or wavering as he hurried to claim victory before his opponent could recover.

Escador joined the effort, kicking and punching at any partial wounds Yorian created. Between the two of them, they finally managed to tear apart the occorite, both collapsing to the ground as the white-blue light faded from its components.
